Subject: Oracle Discoverer 3.1 Installation failed

Hi friends,

Did you try to install an Oracle Discoverer 3.1 on the same NT Server machine where an Oracle Enterprise Server 8.1.6 is?

On the fist Oracle Installer screen ('Oracle Installation Settings') I have accepted the default parameters for an Oracle Home:
Name: 'OraHome81'
Location: 'F:\Oracle\Ora81'
Language: 'English'

But, I've got an error message during the Oracle Discoverer installation: "The location specified, 'F:\Oracle\Ora81', is already used as an Oracle home for 'Oracle 816 Production'. It cannot be used as an Oracle home for 'nt'". Then the installation was abnormally interrupted, meaning it cannot be installed into my default ORACLE_HOME. From the other hand, Oracle8i documentation says that Oracle Discoverer can be installed into DEFAULT_HOME only.

When I've changed the Name string into DEFAULT_HOME and the Location string (the directory where Oracle Discoverer will be installed)
into 'F:\Oracle', I got another error message: "Oracle Discoverer does not support multiple installations, and therefore cannot be installed on 'DEFAULT_HOME'. It can only be installed on 'OraHome81'. Please run Oracle Installer again, and select 'OraHome81' as the target location." Then the installation was abnormally interrupted again!

As a result, I stuck right over here...

I have found an empty registry file in my ORACLE_HOME\Orainst ('F:\Oracle\Ora81\Orainst') directory called 'Oracle 816 Production.rgs'.
Definitely, the Oracle Installer formed its first error message using
this filename.
When I renamed the file, the Discoverer eventually has been installed
into my default ORACLE_HOME but became unavailable for a connection.
Many new files have appeared in the 'F:\Oracle\Ora81\Orainst', previously
there was only the empty registry one.

I have uninstalled the Discoverer.

Are there any restrictions to run Oracle Discoverer and Oracle Server on the same box? (I think - shouldn't be).
Should I install Oracle Discoverer first, and then Oracle Enterprise Server?
Should I install Oracle Discoverer on Oracle Personal Edition?
(Right now I need these products for my presentations only).

Any suggestions/help/advice would be very appreciated.
Thanks at advance.

Yes, I solved the problem.
Oracle Discoverer, and many other clients
can be installed into DEFAULT_HOME only.
To install both Client and Server on the
same machine, you need:
1) Wipe out everything that belong to Oracle
(files and registry variables).
2) Install Discoverer and all other cliens
you need into DEFAULT_HOME.
3) Install Oracle Server and a database
into a different home, I named it SERVER_HOME.
4) Config the remote connection using Easy Config
or just editing your Client tnsnames.ora.
It works fine on my machine now.
Now I'm going to install iAS (Internet Application
Server) on the same machine as well.
Good luck, Vu.
