Upgrade to RAC implies hardware upgrade and so downtime can't be minimal.

Define minimal. Unless you put a metric to it, it is meaningless.
Upgrade is not a problem, in most cases.
Moving database, will take some time depending on volume/nature of database.
Can you atleast test the setup 'minimally'? Will your applications /database behave normally?

Setup a parallel RAC environment.
Get comfortable with RAC, data moving procedures/upgrade etc.
Set meaningful minimum downtime and try to work towards it.

HI Mahesh Rajendran

Thanks for suggestion , there are three things
1- Oracle upgrading from 9i R2 to 11g R2
2- Single instance to RAC environment ( Service Guard )
3 -OS HP-UX 11i V1 Parisc to Hp-UX 11i V3 Itanium

Can I use DATA-GUARD physical standby database i.e my primary DB is on 9iR2 and stand by will be on 11g R2 is Data-guard supported such situation ?
Regards

Not sure with 11g.
In previous versions, all Oracle versions should be same.
With 11g some rules have been 'relaxed'.
The doco talks about some metalink notes. Look into them.
