Developer is importing some large volumes of data. As the filesystem was filling up fast, I removed the all the archive log files. Will this affect the functioning of database? It is a development environment.

No, just the ability to recover the database.

In this case, you should go to noarchivelog mode before importing then switch back to archivelog mode after that and run a full backup.

No, just the ability to recover the database.

It would hamper the ability to recover the database or just the data which they are importing?

The database or any part of it.
If you remove archiveg lods (without backing them up) then you can't recover anything from your database to a more recent point than the last archived logs before the first one you deleted.

You mean to say that we wont be able to recover the database to the more recent point (time) without the current archive logs, but can recover until the period with whatever archivelogs are available. Right?

Yes only to the point of the last archived log before which there is no one of the deleted archived logs.
