This is NOT a backup of your database, this is a dump of it.

If it has been exported with exp version 9i.

I operate a one-man campaign trying to explain that an export (which I assume is what you have, from the .dmp filename suffix) is NOT a backup. I even blogged about it here a year or so ago. But never mind that.

You may be able to import into a 9i database, but some objects might fail. What happens when you try it?

Michel,

You say it is a dump and not a backup. What does it mean ?Can you explain it in detail ?

I was thinking an export is another way to backup database apart from RMAN and USER MANAGED
backup.

If you say export is not a backup , then what it is used for ?

Can you please explain it?

Thank you

From the documentation:

Quote:

An export file is an Oracle binary-format dump file that is typically located on disk or tape. The dump files can be transferred using FTP or physically transported (in the case of tape) to a different site. The files can then be used with the Import utility to transfer data between databases that are on systems not connected through a network. The files can also be used as backups in addition to normal backup procedures.

From my point of view: when you have a proper backup, if anything goes wrong with your database, you can easily restore it. If you don't really care about datafiles, controlfiles, etc. etc. - for example, you are running an XE edition and use only Scott's schema for your own purposes - for example, testing your (PL/)SQL skills and such, an export file might be just "enough". If your disk crashes or whatever happens to the database, XE is easily reinstalled (*) and you'd then simply import your Scott's schema back.

(*) As we all know, this is not always true. We've seen people struggling with XE installation rather often.

Does the discussion here http://orafaq.com/node/2392 help explain? A backup is a copy of datafiles, an export is a copy of data segments.

I agree with your words. But did you also mind to see the comments from Sriram and Others in the link you provided who disagree with your words.

Can you clarify their comments ?

No, I'm not going to comment on anything until you do some work yourself.

For example, you could explain how to protect your DB against various types of problem. Such as:
Destruction of a file system
A few corrupted blocks, as here http://www.orafaq.com/forum/mv/msg/177681/537490/0/#msg_537490
Loss of your curent logfile group
And so on.

If this isn't already in your system procedures, it should be. Over to you.
