I want install oracle 11g r2 in a VMware virtual machine,
I have a dual core processor 2GHz with 3Gb of Ram running under windows 7, I tried installing oracle 11g in windows server 2008 and ubuntu 12, but when the installation of oracle finished and the instance is started the performance is very slow and I see a lot of disk I/O (causing by the swap I think), so I tried older systems and now I'm working with a windows server 2003 VM, it's a little bit slow but better than ubuntu and win server 2008.
Now I want try a linux distribution, and I know the recent distributions require a lot of memory and disk space... so I'm looking for an "older" fast distribution that can works with 'Oracle databse 11g R2'.
I can give 1 Gb Ram, 20 Gb disk space so what is your suggestions ?

Your problem may be VMware. I use Oracle VirtualBox, a 1G VM is plenty big enough. Any release of OEL, I usually use 5.7. You won't be able to install the full GI as well as the DB unless you can give it 1.5G.

You should check if the processor virtualisation mode is enabled and if it is enabled in your bios
Have you already installed the recommended paravirtualised drivers on the guest (windows,linux...), so vmware (or another) has less work to do?
*edit* forgot you tried to run windows 2008 with 1GB ram, try to up it to at least 2GB.
