I could run a two node 11.2 cluster using VirtualBox in a Windows 8.1 laptop with 8GB RAM. Two VMs for the RAC nodes with 2.4GB RAM each, a third VM with 500MB RAM to act as a DHCP, DNS, and NFS server. For release 12.1, you need 4GB per cluster hub node, 2GB for cluster leaf nodes.

I run a 12c RAC&GI course where we build a four node cluster (two hubs, two leaves) plus a fifth node for DNS/DHCP/NFS using VirtualBox on Linux machines with 16GB RAM.

That should give you a few ideas to research.

Hi Ramesh,
Creating SHARED DRIVE IN VM BOX:
Step 1: Add(Create) drive to node1
Step 2: Remove DRIVE from node1
step 3: Shutdown node1
step 4: Start node1
step 5: Now add the drive which already removed the node1, but choose to share the drive in VM BOX
step 6: For the second node(node2),simply add the shared drive.
Step 7: shut down two nodes.
step 8: After adding the shared drive to two nodes, first start the node1,after you login to the first node1, start node2.
Step 9: It will show some configuration settings, please go through it.

Virtual Box makes this super easy. You create a disk file in the first VM. Then go to File --> Virtual Media Manager and modify the file to be Shareable. You can then mount that file on the other VM. I have a blog entry with step-by-step instructions here: http://www.peasland.net/2015/04/23/oracle-rac-on-my-laptop-with-virtual-box/

I will add that the ability of VB to create shared storage is the primary reason that I use only Virtual Box when running Oracle RAC on my laptop or private workstation. If you want to use another VM, then you do have a few options. You can use network-attached storage. If you don't have network attached storage, you can create another VM to act as an iSCSI target. Then have the RAC VM's be iSCSI clients. This means you'll need to have 3 VM's up and running. So much easier in VB. Smile

Cheers,
Brian
