If you add a new string value in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE/HOME0

call it ORACLE_SID, and make it point to a default DB. (that will be connected to if you don't specify a DB)

Not sure how to get round it otherwise other than specifying the SID as part of the connection parameters, I'd also make sure that you have set up the service name variable the same as the SID in the initxxx.ora file, some TNS setups use the service name instead if SID in the connection parameters, This will mean the TNS service will not pick up your database, especially if you are using ODBC.
