Try installing a new sun JRE and look if your Windows Installer Version is Version 2.Maybe it helps.

Nope -- the problem was that symcjit.dll had somehow gotten onto the hard drive in non-standard places. Once we did a search on all local drives fort that file and renamed it, it worked great. Apparently it is not sufficient just to rename it on the CD sometimes.
