accessing oracle behind firewall (ora-12541 no listener error) [message #123211]

Hello,

I've got an oracle server running on our intranet. It's working fine so no problems there.

No I want to access this server from outside our company.
We've got the following setup:

computer outside: ip: aaa.aaa.aaa.aaa

Firewall ip: bbb.bbb.bbb.bbb

oracle server: 172.ccc.ccc.ccc.

all traffic from aaa to bbb on all ports is forwarded to the oracle server: 172.ccc

I've got the computer outside setup in tnsnames.ora to connect to computer bbb.bbb

When I try to connect to oracle from computer outside I get the ora-12541 no listener error. The listener is running because inside the company everyone can connect.

What should I do?

Can you ping the server from outside?
if yes then
Make sure the concerned listener port is open from outside.
or the problem might be with ipredirection.
What kind of OS is on the server?
if windows , set the registry settting USE_SHARED_SOCKET = TRUE and bounce the server. try again.

I can't ping the server, but that's because the firewall or our router is denying it.

We made a forwarding rule in the firewall that routes all
the traffic from outside from my ip to the database server.

I don't know the OS but will check this on monday. Will try the registry setting also.

By the way: did you do some work for the missing link about two years ago?

Now That is pretty much an OS/FIREWALL/NETWORK issue.
you need to resolve this first!.

Well ping may be blocked on firewall/router level...

Do check for the response on listener specific ports from your machine.
Default port is 1521 (unless listener is configured to run on other ports)
Check for these ports by telneting them or using some port scanning utility like nmap.

I should have been more specific. Ping request are denied. I can reach the server.

Did in fact a port scan (thanx for the tip) and it seems like that the forwarding rule doesn't work. I will contact the network administrator on monday and hope he can help.

Is there a firewall involved in the windows machine?
set USE_SHARED_SOCKET=TRUE registry setting and reboot.
try again.
