Hi,

heres another Replication-Question. We have two ORACLE-Standard-Edition installations, one is installed on a maschine in our production department and one is installed on an central server. We want to replicate the data from the production-DB to the central server to backup the data on tape drives.
Is this possible using the feature of standard edition? Which way would be the best to implement that scenario?

You can use basic replication and materialized view with SE but neither Advanced Replication nor Streams.

Another question i have is concerning the materialized views, are they stored physically on the server i replicate them to so that i can backup and restore them? I have to archive the data that we capture and in case of a problem i need to take a look to the data after several years.

If you just want to keep the data, regularly export the tables and save the export files.

Besides the backup we need the data on the main-server because there are several applications that should access the data to analyse it and we also want the production system to be able to work even if the main-system is not available (in case of network-problems etc.).

Export does not remove the data from the database.

No,

i just meant, that we already backup the whole database so that it would be easier if we do not need aditional exports to save.

If you already know the answer you want why do you ask?
I just say that if you want to retrieve data from time to time, it is easier to export and reimport them instead of rebuilding a whole database from a backup.
It's up to you.

What is the "central server" used for? Is it just a staging area to dump backup files to eventually backup to tape? If so, then why don't you just use RMAN?

The "central server" is the server where the most of our data is stored and that is accessed by many applications.
The "production server" is just needed to make the production independent of the availability of the "central server".
