hI,

I am working at a client side where they had an old 8i system.

I am trying to connect to 8i system but getting error

Quote:
ora-12560 - tns:protocol adapter error

I tried editing the tnsnames.ora, listener.ora file but the problem still persists. I tried to configure the files through net configuration assistant but it does not open.

What steps should I take to resolve this issue?

Please let me know if this information is not enough.

Hi,

Here it is

Attached are copies of the tnsnames.ora, listener.ora and sqlnet.ora files. This is the state I got it when I was assigned the work. The systems also has an installation of oracle 10g (which has the service name PRO).

The default home is of 8i so when did the following

cmd>sqlplus

8i opened asking for username, I did the following

sql> username /as sysdba
and it connected to 10g

Then I checked the tnsnames.ora file and it showed PRO(10g) as the sid name. so I changed it to Oracle (8i), then tried again

sql> username /as sysdba
sql> username sys
sql> password sys

but it gave me error
Quote:
ora-12560 - tns:protocol adapter error
.

I know the I will have to configure listener and edit the files but not very sure how to go about it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

but how do I connect to 8i.. which is still there on the server.

Should I deinstall 10g first? Or should I use the net8 configuration assistant and try something out

Use 8i or 9i product to connect to 8i database.
Don't use 10g ones.
You don't have to deinstall 10g, just use another home.
